Recent Leopard 2A8 contracts
| Buyer | Tanks | Reported value | Per tank (all-in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Croatia (Dec 2025) | 44 | ~€1.48–1.5 billion | ~€34 million |
| Czech Republic (2025) | 44 | ~€1.34 billion | ~€30 million |
The reported values include service, support, training and country-specific changes, not just the vehicles. Estimates of the tank alone are around €29 million (2023).
Why the package price is so high
- Training for crews and maintainers, often in Germany.
- Spare parts and tools for several years of operation.
- Support vehicles such as recovery tanks, bridge layers and driver-training tanks.
- Ammunition, which can be bought separately and is expensive: a single modern armor-piercing round can cost thousands of euros.
- Active protection: the Trophy system adds significant cost per tank. A January 2026 contract for Trophy for four countries' tanks was worth EUR 330 million.
- Inflation and demand. Since 2022, orders have outrun factory capacity, pushing prices up.
What does a used Leopard 2 cost?
After the Cold War, Germany and the Netherlands sold surplus 2A4s at a small fraction of new prices, which is why so many smaller armies have them. Those bargains are gone: since 2022 surplus Leopards have been in demand for Ukraine and for European rearmament, and prices for refurbished tanks have risen sharply. Switzerland, for example, agreed in 2023 to sell 25 stored Leopards back to Germany to replace tanks given to Ukraine.
Leopard 2 vs Abrams cost
Poland's 2022 contract for 250 new American M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams was about US$4.75 billion including support, or roughly $19 million per tank all-in. Package deals are hard to compare directly because each includes different extras, but the two tanks are broadly in the same price class. See Leopard 2 vs Abrams.
Can a private person buy a Leopard?
A working Leopard 2 cannot be bought privately. Demilitarized Leopard 1s occasionally appear at specialist auctions and museums, but with the gun disabled and subject to strict export rules.
